Coffee and Cardamom Ice Cream – Helado de Café y Cardamomo
In the home of a Finnish friend, I once tried coffee with cardamom, and I absolutely loved the combo. She prepares the coffee using a French press, and adds a few cardamom seeds. Since that time, I occasionally make my morning coffee with this spice. When I saw this ice cream recipe, I immediately wrote it down in my recipes notebook, but then I forgot about it. A few weeks ago, I was checking my notebook when I suddenly saw it, as since July is National Ice Cream Month, I think it’s a good time to prepare it.
It’s super easy to prepare, you don’t need an ice cream maker. All you have to do is mix all the ingredients, pour into an ice cream container, and freeze. Many people like to finish their meal with a good cup of coffee, but in hot weather, drinking a hot coffee isn’t such a good idea. That’s when this ice cream makes an excellent choice, the coffee flavor is very intense.
As I really like the taste of cardamom, next time I might add a little more. I feel that the predominant flavor in the ice cream is coffee, and the cardamom flavor gets a little bit lost. It is a fairly sweet ice cream. All the sugar is obtained from the condensed milk. So if you don’t have a strong sweet tooth, the option would be to slightly reduce the amount of condensed milk, but I’m sure the final consistency of the ice cream will be affected. So I would reduce the quantity of condensed milk, but increase the heavy cream at the same ratio.
I think the photos don’t make justice to the delicious flavor of the ice cream. I have a hard time photographing ice creams; they begin to melt and in a matter of seconds, I end up with a big mess. Besides, I always need someone to help me, it is impossible to hold an ice cream cone, and take a picture at the same time.
I hope you are encouraged to try this delicious Coffee and Cardamom ice cream. Its preparation is very simple and I think it’s the perfect dessert for a refreshing summer meal.

We always put cardamom in all our Indian desserts and also in our chai (tea), I bet it tasted awesome with coffee it. Cardamom is one of my favorite spices! 🙂 And I agree clicking ice cream is tough, it starts melting and then creates a big mess. By the way Azu, it’s not impossible to hold a cone in one hand and shoot from the other. Check this post http://www.cookwithmanali.com/mint-chocolate-chip-ice-cream/, the second picture I shot with one hand as I was holding the cone with another. You just have to be quick! 🙂
The combination of coffee and cardamom is delicious! You should try it. I was just thinking about making a chai ice cream!
I just visited your blog, and the cone photo is amazing! I’m impressed with your ability at taking food photos.
This flavour combination is really intriguing, thanks for sharing… And it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who writes down food notes, then promptly forgets about them 🙂
